Eight French knights led by Hugh of Payns approached King of Jerusalem Baldwin II with an idea to establish monastic order of knights for the protection of pilgrims.
King agreed and gave newly established brotherhood palace, former Aqsa mosque, on Temple Mount as headquarters. Since Temple Mount is believed to be the original place of Temple of Solomon, brotherhood began to be called the Templars.
